The image of West Africa in the travel novel Afrika of Rastko Petrović

Serbski pisarz Rastko Petrović (1898- 1949) odbył w swoim życiu podróż do Afryki Zachodniej oraz udokumentował ją w powieści podróżniczej „Afrika” (1930). Utwór zawiera obszerny opis afrykańskiej rzeczywistości okresu międzywojennego, Rastko Petrović skoncentrował się na obrazie egzotycznej przyrody Afryki, chorobach tropikalnych, wizerunku Afrykańczyków oraz ich społeczeństwa. Wśród poruszonych problemów powieści znajduje się także wzajemny stosunek między afrykańskimi autochtonami a europejskimi kolonizatorami. Serbski podróżnik dzieli się z czytelnikami swymi przemyśleniami oraz uwagami poczynionymi podczas afrykańskiej wyprawy, której nadrzędnym celem była chęć spełnienia marzenia spotkania prymitywności, pierwotności oraz egzotyki obecnej w kulturze oraz samych mieszkańcach Czarnego Lądu.

Serbian writer Rastko Petrović (1898-1949) traveled to West Africa in his life and documented it in his travel novel “Afrika” (1930). The work contains an extensive description of the African reality of the interwar period, Rastko Petrović focused on the exotic landscape of Africa, tropical diseases, the image of Africans and their society. Among the issues raised in the novel, there is also the relationship between the African indigenous people and the European colonizers. The Serbian traveler shares his thoughts and remarks made during the African expedition, the superior goal of which was to fulfill the dream of meeting the primitiveness and the exotics present in culture and the inhabitants of Dark Continent.
