Iphigenia in the Literature and Art of Ancient Greek and Rome

Praca opisuje i analizuje obecność, recepcję i transformację mitu Ifigenii w literaturze i sztuce starożytnej Grecji i Rzymu. Całość podzielona jest na trzy rozdziały: „Ifigenia w literaturze greckiej”, „Ifigenia w literaturze rzymskiej” oraz „Ifigenia w sztuce greckiej i rzymskiej”. Pierwszy rozdział obejmuje chronologicznie okres od VIII w. p. n. e. do VI w. n. e. i skupia się na jedenastu greckich pisarzach, od Homera po Prokopiusza. Największy wpływ na recepcję mitu wywarła twórczość Eurypidesa, który jest autorem dwóch nowatorskich dramatów poświęconych Ifigenii. Drugi rozdział omawia obecność mitu w twórczości pisarzy rzymskich m. in. Cycerona, Wergiliusza, Owidiusza, Seneki Młodszego, Kwintyliana. Autorka dowodzi, że poeci i mówcy rzymscy przejęli i przekształcili grecką tradycję związaną z córką Agamemnona dla własnych celów literackich i artystycznych. Rozdział trzeci omawia wybrane dzieła sztuki greckiej i rzymskiej związane z tematem, które charakteryzują się bogatą symboliką i kunsztem artystycznym. Dzieła te zostały skomentowane i porównane z tekstami literackimi omówionymi w poprzednich dwóch rozdziałach. Dysertację dopełnia ikonografia oraz bibliografia.

The thesis attempts to describe and analyze the presence, reception and transformation of the myth of Iphigenia in Greek and Roman literature and art. The work is divided into three chapters: "Iphigenia in the Ancient Greek Literature", "Iphigenia in the Roman Literature", and "Iphigenia in the Ancient Greek and Roman Art". The first chapter covers chronologically the period from 8th Century BC until the 6th Century AD and includes eleven Greek writers, from Homer to Procopius. The greatest influence on the subject in that period was exerted by the work of Euripides who is the author of two innovative dramas dedicated to Iphigenia. The second chapter discusses the presence of the myth of Agamemnon’s daughter in the works of Roman writers, including such influential authors as Cicero, Vergil, Ovid, Seneca the Minor and Quintilian. The author argues that the Roman poets and orators adopted and transformed Greek legacy of Iphigenia for their own literary and artistic designs and purposes. The third chapter is based on eight examples of Greek and Roman art, which were selected on the basis of their rich symbolism and iconography. The masterpieces were commented and compared with the literary texts discussed in the previous two chapters. The text is supplemented by the iconography and the bibliography.
