Biodiversity and Its aporias : toward (un)awareness of anthropocentric wildlife conservation

Punktem wyjścia do namysłu nad aporiami bioróżnorodności był projekt Dagny Jakubowskiej Chwasty, zaprezentowany w ramach wystawy Floraphilia. Rewolucja roślin. Instalacja organizowana przez Biennale Warszawa nie tylko poruszała kwestie migracji świata roślinnego, ale także podkreślała arbitralność ustanawiania gatunków inwazyjnych, obnażając tym samym rzekomą neutralność scjentystycznej nomenklatury. Skupiając się na partykularnym gatunku rdestowca ostrokończystego (Reynoutria japonica Houtt.), autorka tekstu stara się prześledzić botanikę kolonizacji oraz związane z nią biologiczne konsekwencje pomieszania ekosystemów. Przypadek rdestowca ostrokończystego to tylko jeden z przykładów globalnych połączeń, choć rozpatrywany w skali partykularnej może posłużyć do mapowania makroopowieści o krótkowzrocznym działaniu człowieka w epoce antropocenu. Kodą tekstu jest próba zmapowania rośl-innych prób przeżycia na ruinach kapitalistycznej produkcji.

Inspired by the project created by Dagna Jakubowska, the paper deals with the reflection on aporias of biodiversity. The Weeds by Jakubowska were a part of the larger exhibition Floraphillia. The Revolution of Plants organized by Biennale Warszawa. The exhibition not only dealt with the migration of plants, but also denuded and emphasized the arbitrariness of establishing invasive species, thus revealing the alleged neutrality of the scientific nomenclature. By focusing on a particular species of Japanese Knotweed (Fallopia japonica), the author tries to trace the botany of colonization and the related biological consequences of mixing ecosystems. Knotweed, being just one of the examples of global connection, although considered on a particular scale, can facilitate mapping macro-stories about human myopia in the Anthropocene. The coda of this chapter is an attempt at showing the possibilities of plant survival on capitalist ruins.
