It is only opera fans who can associate it with a famous work of Richard Wagner – Tannhäuser and Wartburg minstrel contest. The emergence of this medieval legend is quite complicated and it stems from the cultural code of the German Nation mixed with some supernatural elements, taken from various cultural traditions. Numerous factors contribute to its origin. First of all, it is a historical person of a minnesinger from the thirteenth century, who as a forgotten author of love poetry, is recorded in legends and novels where he becomes a literary hero. An important element is the way the ancient and medieval worlds are combined due to a grotto of Venus – a goddess who also appears in German culture. With many records which aimed to prove that Germans were the heirs of the Romans, the story has been deeply rooted in both the minds and works of our western neighbours. In the following centuries the subject matter referring to the minnesinger has been repeatedly adapted and incorporated in various ways into the works of numerous writers and other artistic creators. The theme has even managed to enter the pop culture. All this testifies to the unprecedented greatness of this legend, which plays an important role in both history of literature and also history of art. This study attempts to undertake the exploration of the complex subject of the transformations of Tannhäuser Legend.
