Zmiana zachowania gospodarza pod wpływem patogenu, mająca na celu zwiększenie dostosowania patogenu, nazywana jest manipulacją behawioralną. Zachowania i cechy zwierzęcia, wynikające z ekspresji genów patogenu, a nie jego własnych, stanowią rozszerzony fenotyp patogenu. Większość organizmów jest stale zainfekowana przez wiele różnych patogenów, a ostateczne zmiany w zachowaniu zwierzęcia są wypadkową wpływu poszczególnych patogenów. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie, jak patogeny wpływają na zmianę zachowania gospodarza. Temat opracowano poprzez opisanie czterech przykładów: bakulowirusów, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis sensu lato, wirusa wścieklizny i Toxoplasma gondii.

Behavioral changes in the host occurring under the influence of a pathogen and resulting in an increase of the pathogen’s fitness are qualified as behavioral manipulation. Phenotypic traits induced by the pathogen’s genome, as opposed to the host’s, are referred to as an extended phenotype of the pathogen. The majority of living organisms are continuously being affected by various pathogens, therefore the eventual behavior of an animal is a product of each one’s individual influence. The purpose of this paper is to describe how pathogens influence their host’s behavior. In order to explore the subject, four model species were examined: (i) Baculoviruses, (ii) Ophiocordyceps unilateralis sensu lato, (iii) Rabies virus, and (iv) Toxoplasma gondii.
