A modern cultural institution. The impact of the investment in the seat of the Municipal Public Library in Czechowice-Dziedzice on its development and functioning

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie środowiska Miejskiej Biblioteki Publicznej w Czechowicach-Dziedzicach i przedstawienie rekomendacji, których wdrożenie mogłoby wpłynąć na zwiększenie poziomu zainteresowania usługami wśród odbiorców oraz poprawienie efektywności pracy personelu. Poruszono problem wpływu siedziby i dostępnych zasobów na zaciekawienie użytkowników ofertą instytucji oraz jej funkcjonowanie. W początkowej części pracy skupiono się na przedstawieniu sytuacji czytelniczej w Polsce, a także określeniu funkcji i zakresu działań współczesnych bibliotek. Nawiązano do koncepcji „trzeciego miejsca” oraz modelu Biblioteka 2.0. Przedstawiono regulacje prawne, które oddziałują na codzienne funkcjonowanie książnic oraz przybliżono rolę bibliotekarza w nowoczesnej instytucji kultury. Stworzono mapę placówek edukacyjno-kulturalnych, działających na terenie Czechowic-Dziedzic oraz scharakteryzowano Miejską Bibliotekę Publiczną. W celu uzyskania materiału potrzebnego do analizy zasobów i oceny funkcjonowania czechowickiej książnicy przeprowadzono ankietę rekonesansową oraz wywiady z pracownikami instytucji. Dokonano przeglądu zebranego materiału badawczego i opisano wyniki badań. Na zakończenie zaprezentowano wnioski i sformułowano rekomendacje dla biblioteki.

The primary purpose of this master’s thesis is to investigate the Municipal Public Library's environment in Czechowice-Dziedzice and present the recommendations, the implementations of which may increase the level of interest in services among local readers and all the people who visit this place. These recommendations may improve the functioning of the library as a public institution, but they would also increase the efficiency level of the staff. The problem of the impact of the library's location and available resources on the users’ interest was discussed as well. The theoretical section focuses on presenting the issues connected with the reading situation in Poland and defining the functions and scope of activities of modern libraries. This work refers to the concept of the „third place” and the Library 2.0 model. It presents some law regulations, which mainly influence how the library functions and plays its educational role in the local society. Particular attention has been paid to the role of the librarian in a modern cultural institution. This master’s thesis includes a brief description of the Municipal Public Library in Czechowice-Dziedzice and a list of educational and cultural institutions operating in Czechowice-Dziedzice. To obtain the data needed to analyze the resources and assess the functioning of the library in Czechowice-Dziedzice, a reconnaissance survey and interviews with the employees of this institution were carried out. The obtained results were then analyzed and described. The final chapter of this master’s thesis consists of some conclusions and recommendations for the local library.
