Transformative seeing: affective transformations of the subject of Józef Czapski's essays on the example of "Seeing" and "Reading"

Praca podejmuje temat ładunku afektywnego zawartego w esejach Józefa Czapskiego. Przeanalizowane zostają strategie, za pomocą których autor nawiązuje relację z czytelnikiem, między innymi sposób w jaki miejscami intensyfikuje swoją obecność, by następnie zupełnie pozbawić ją sprawczości. Wraz z procesem czytania esejów odbiorca zaczyna pełnić rolę zarówno oprawcy jak i ofiary. Niniejsza praca kładzie szczególny nacisk na wspólnotę łączącą autora i czytelnika, podkreślając, że zbudowana zostaje ona na doświadczeniu utraty, cierpienia i wstydu.

The thesis covers an issue of affective aspects of Józef Czapski's essays. It examines the narrative strategies used to establish a relationship with the reader, for example intensifying the author's presence in some passages and then completely eliminating it in others. In the process of reading Czapski's works, the recipient finds himself both in the role of torturer and the victim. The thesis pays special attention to the nature of the unity created between reader and writer, arguing that it is based on the experience of loss, suffering, and shame.
