Wstęp: Największe organizacje zdrowotne i towarzystwa naukowe rekomendują wyłączne karmienie naturalne mlekiem matki przez pierwsze 6 miesięcy życia oraz kontynuowanie wraz z rozszerzaniem diety dziecka, aby zapewnić im prawidłowy wzrost, rozwój i ochronę immunologiczną. Pomimo licznych badań, które potwierdzają pozytywne aspekty karmienia piersią, wciąż wiele kobiet decyduje się na nieuzasadnione medycznie dokarmianie noworodka mieszankami mleka modyfikowanego. Cel: Celem pracy była analiza poziomu wiedzy kobiet na temat żywienia noworodka donoszonego i przedwcześnie urodzonego w pierwszych dobach po porodzie oraz poznanie opinii na temat wyboru metody karmienia. Materiał i metody: Badania zostały przeprowadzone metodą sondażu diagnostycznego, techniką autorskiej anonimowej ankiety składającej się z 27 pytań. Grupę stanowiły kobiety na różnych etapach macierzyństwa. Kwestionariusz miał na celu sprawdzenie poziomu ich wiedzy oraz opinii na temat sposobu karmienia noworodka.Wyniki i wnioski: Ponad połowa respondentek zakładała karmienie swojego dziecka wyłącznie piersią lub ewentualne dokarmienie swoim odciągniętym pokarmem. Jednocześnie kobiety deklarujące karmienie wyłącznie piersią charakteryzowały się wyższym poziomem wiedzy niż te, które rozważały dokarmienie mieszanką. Uczestnictwo w szkole rodzenia jak i edukacja przez personel medyczny ma wpływ na wybór metody karmienia. Położne odgrywają znaczącą rolę w promocji karmienia naturalnego.

Introduction: The largest health organizations and scientific societies recommend exclusive natural breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life and continuing with the expanding baby's diet to ensure proper growth, development and baby’s immune protection. Despite a kot of research that confirm the positive aspects of breastfeeding, many women still decide to feed their newborns with a formula milk. This is not medically necessary.Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the level of knowledge of women about the nutrition of full-term and premature newborns in the first days after delivery and to find out opinions on the choice of the feeding method.Material and methods: The research was used the metod of diagnostic survey, using the author's anonymous questionnaire technique consisting of 27 questions. The study group consisted of 182 women at different stages of motherhood. The questionnaire was aimed at checking the level of their knowledge and opinions on the way of feeding the newborn.Results and conclusions: More than half of the respondents assumed that their child would only be breastfed or possibly supplemented with their expressed milk. At the same time, women who declaring only breastfeeding had a higher level of knowledge than those who considered feeding with the formula. Participation in birthing school and education by medical staff have an impact on the choice of feeding method. Midwives play a significant role in promoting breastfeeding
