Where the pub ends? The process of institutionalization on the example of the Bonobo cafe and bookstore

Podstawowym celem mojej pracy było ukazanie wieloaspektowego zagadnienia jakim jest budowanie granic instytucji w należycie szerokim kontekście. Jako podstawę teoretyczną przyjąłem antropologię organizacji, przez co moją uwagę przykuł zasadniczy dla tworzenia owych granic proces instytucjonalizacji. Prowadząc badania w kawiarnio- księgarnii Bonobo postarałem się go prześledzić i opisać. Poszczególne rozdziały pracy rozwijają i doprecyzowują całość tego przedsięwzięcia.W pierwszym bazując na literaturze dotyczącej badań etnograficznych (autorstwa, między innymi Tomasza Rakowskiego, Agnieszki Halemby, Kirsten Hastrup, czy Vered Amit) zarysowałem postawy metodologiczne pracy. Opisałem zarówno proces wytwarzania problemu badawczego, jak i konstruowania terenu. Do zebrania materiału badawczego posłużyła mi intensywna obserwacja uczestnicząca. W oddzielnym podrozdziale doprecyzowałem jej założenia oraz sposób w jaki ją zastosowałem. Zamykając tę część pracy określiłem moje pozycjonowanie się w ramach procesu badawczego. Celem kolejnego rozdziału było określenie ram metodologicznych. Bazując głownie na pracach Moniki Kostery, Petera Bergera i Thomasa Luckmana określiłem czym jest instytucja w ramach antropologii organizacji. Następnie opisałem podstawowe pojęcia wynikające z tej orientacji teoretycznej, czyli instytucjonalizację, pole organizacyjne i granice organizacji. Uzupełniając siatkę pojęć posłużyłem się terminami miejsca i przestrzeni w rozumieniu Ji-Fu Tuana.Rozdział trzeci prezentuje zebrany materiał badawczy w świetle zastosowanych teorii i metody. Jego celem jest wskazanie punktów, w których konstytuują się granice w relacjach między uczestnikami organizacji, czy pomiędzy instytucjami, z którymi badana kawiarnio-księgarnia wchodzi w nieustanny kontakt. Dzieli się on na trzy pomniejsze części umiejscawiając granice interesującej mnie instytucji w przestrzennie zawężających się kontekstach: miasta, kamienicy w której znajduje się kawiarnio-księgarnia Bonobo, oraz jej wnętrzu.

The main goal of my work was to show the multifaceted issue of building the boundaries of institutions in a properly broad context. As the theoretical basis, I adopted the anthropology of the organization, which engaged my attention to the process of institutionalization, which is essential for the creation of these boundaries. While conducting research in the Bonobo café-bookstore, I tried to trace it and describe it. The individual chapters of the work develop and specify the entirety of this undertaking.Thefirst chapter is based on the literature on ethnographic research (by Tomasz Rakowski, Agnieszka Halemba, Kirsten Hastrup, Vered Amit and others), I outlined the methodological attitudes of the work. I have described both the process of producing the research problem and constructing the site. To gather the research material I used intensive participant observation. In a separate subsection I have clarified its assumptions and the way in which I applied it. By closing this part of the work, I specified my positioning within the research process.The purpose of the next chapter was to define the methodological framework. Based on the works of Monika Kostera, Peter Berger and Thomas Luckman, I describe what is the institution within the anthropology of the organization. Then I depicted the basic terms deriving from this theoretical orientation, i.e. institutionalization, the organizational field and the boundaries of the organization. Complementing the network of concepts, I used the idea of place and space as understood by Ji-Fu Tuan.The third chapter presents the collected research material in the light of the applied theories and methods. The purpose is to depict the points at which the boundaries are formed in the relations between the participants of the organization or between examined café-bookstore and another institutions in witch they come in constant contact with. It is divided into three smaller parts, locating the boundaries of the institution that I am interested in spatially narrowing contexts: the city, the house in which the Bonobo café-bookshop is located, and its interior.
