Dutch Masters in Film Art

Tematem pracy dyplomowej jest zbadanie relacji pomiędzy sztuką malarską a filmową. Twórczość niderlandzkich mistrzów: Rembrandta van Rijna, Jana Vermeera oraz Vincenta van Gogha została wybrana jako główny przedmiot do analizy. Problematyka pracy skupia się głównie na zbadaniu sposobów oraz technik przenoszenia dzieła plastycznego na język filmu. Praca składa się w dużej mierze z analizy oraz interpretacji obrazów wyżej wymienionych artystów, które zostały zawarte w następujących filmach: Nightwatching (2007) Petera Greenaywaya, Dziewczyna z perłą (2003) Petera Webbera oraz Van Gogh. U bram wieczności (2018) Juliana Schnabela. Jednym z celów jest również umieszczenie dzieła malarskiego w teorii adaptacji filmowej. Każdy z filmów został przeanalizowany według życia i twórczości wybranego artysty. Dzięki temu udało się wyróżnić trzy główne techniki, jakimi posługują się twórcy filmowi w przenoszeniu dzieł malarskich na ekran. Szczegółowa analiza wybranych filmów w relacji z dziełami sztuki potwierdziła silną zależność obu mediów.

The theme of this thesis is the examination of the relationship between the art and film. The works of Dutch masters: Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Vermeer and Vincent van Gogh were chosen as the main subject for analysis. The main focus of the thesis is the examination of the ways and techniques of transferring a work of art into the film. The work consists the analysis and interpretation of the paintings of the above-mentioned artists, which were included in the following films: Nightwatching (2007) by Peter Greenayway, Girl with a Pearl (2003) by Peter Webber, and Van Gogh. At the Gates of Eternity (2018) by Julian Schnabel. One of the goals is also to situate the work of painting in the theory of film adaptation. Each film was analyzed according to the life and work of the selected artist. This made it possible to distinguish the three main techniques used by filmmakers in transferring paintings to the screen. A detailed analysis of selected films in relation to works of art confirmed the strong relationship between the two media.
