"The same poet". Aleksander Wat in translation

Sylwetka twórcza Aleksandra Wata zdaje się rozpościerać pomiędzy dwoma biegunami: „jasności” i „ciemności”. Zamierzeniem niniejszej pracy jest bliższe przyjrzenie się jej anglojęzycznemu wizerunkowi. Przedmiot badań stanowią trzy zbiory tłumaczeń wierszy: Mediterranean Poems Czesława Miłosza, With the Skin Czesława Miłosza oraz Leonarda Nathana, a także część pierwsza książki Against the Devil in History Franka L. Vigody. Przekłady zostały umieszczone w szerszym kontekście związanym z biografią tłumaczy, czasem historycznym ich publikacji oraz strategią translatorską – a następnie poddane lekturze porównawczej. Jej celem jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy Wat Miłosza oraz Wat Zlatkesa to rzeczywiście „ten sam poeta”.

The literary profile of Aleksander Wat seems to stretch between two poles: of “light” and “darkness”. The aim of this thesis is a closer look at his English image. The subject of research are three collections of poems’ translations: Mediterranean Poems by Czeslaw Milosz, With the Skin by Czeslaw Milosz and Leonard Nathan and the first part of Against the Devil in History by Frank L. Vigoda. The translations were placed in a broader context of the translators’ biography, the historical time of publication as well as translation strategies. Then, they were subjected to comparative reading. Its purpose is to answer the question of whether Milosz’s Wat and Zlatkes’ Wat are truly “the same poet”.
