Symbolism and Significance of the Lightsaber in the Star Wars universe

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest symbolice i znaczeniu miecza świetlnego w uniwersum Gwiezdnych wojen. Jest to również próba analizy i interpretacji symboliki tej broni poprzez odniesienie do recepcji kultury dawnej. Przyrównanie do średniowiecznych rycerzy europejskich oraz samurajów z czasów feudalnej Japonii pozwala na pełniejsze zrozumienie motywu miecza świetlnego. Następnie, poprzez analizę i odczytanie treści zawartychw uniwersum Gwiezdnych wojen – książki, filmy oraz gry komputerowe – przedstawione zostaje wewnętrzne postrzeganie mieczy świetlnych przez bohaterów uniwersum. Innym spojrzeniem na te aspekty jest zwrócenie się w stronę fandomu, który wytworzył własne rozumienie tego przedmiotu, np. poprzez humor, memy i filmiki autorskie na platformach social media. Wszystkie te rzeczy doprowadzają do powstania pełniejszego obrazu symboliki i znaczenia miecza świetlnego w uniwersum Gwiezdnych wojen.

This work is devoted to the symbolism and importance of the lightsaber in the Star Wars universe. It is also an attempt to analyze and interpret the symbolism of this weapon by referring to the reception of old culture. Comparison with medieval European knights and samurai from feudal Japan allows for a fuller understanding of the lightsaber theme. Then by analyzing and reading the content contained in the Star Wars universe – books, movies and computer games – the inner perception of lightsabers by the heroes of the universe is presented. Another look at these aspects is directed towards the fandom, which has created its own perception of the topic, incl. through humor, memes and original videos on social media platforms. All of these things lead to a more complete picture of the symbolism and meaning of the lightsaber in the Star Wars universe.
