Abstract in English

The paper analyzes the theme of losing one’s national identity in Vladimir Odoevsky’s novel Salamandra. It attempts to answer the question of what led Jakko, the novel’s main character, to forsake his Finnish identity and develop a Russian one. The process is traced step by step on various examples, e.g.: Jakko's lack of a strong father figure in Finland and his finding one in Peter the Great, his sense of a mission to reform Russia, or his desire to study abroad in a more civilized country.
