In 1848, a revolution broke out in Hungary against Habsburg invasion. Austrians demanded Russians to help them to repress this revolution, and together they defeated the Hungarian army. After that, Austrians and Russians executed masses of people related to this event. Especially Hungarians, but also Poles, Italians and other nationalities who had supported Hungarians during the Anti-Habsburg revolution became victims of these fights and the repression after it. The author of this article describes the marriage of two honveds (Hungarian soldiers fighting against Habsburgs during the Springtime of the People in the 19th century) with their Polish wives. This article is based especially on 19-century newspaper articles and on the private correspondence between these two soldiers (Ernő Poeltenberg and József Schweidel) and their wives (Paulina Kakowska and Domicella Bilińska). These documents provide several information concerning their marriages and everyday life, especially after the imprisonment of József Schweidel and Ernő Poeltenberg in Arad, a town belonging to Hungary in that period. These sources also describe some chapters of the destiny of Domicella Bilińska and Paulina Kakowska after the execution of their husbands for participating in the above-mentioned uprising against Habsburgs.
