The image of the institution of marriage in Gabriela Zapolska's short stories

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie zagadnienia obrazu małżeństwa, jaki wyłania się z nowel Gabrieli Zapolskiej, przy uwzględnieniu tekstów z kategorii współczesnej krytyki feministyczno-literackiej. Rozdział pierwszy rozpoczynam od rekapitulacji stanu badawczego. Następnie analizuję poglądy Zapolskiej na kwestie równouprawnienia kobiet, ich roli w życiu publicznym oraz małżeństwa, zawarte w jej listach i publicystyce. Przybliżam również biografię autorki. W kolejnym rozdziale skupiam się na ukazaniu tła społeczno-kulturowego, jakie towarzyszyło instytucji małżeństwa w XIX/XX wieku. Omawiam sytuację prawną kobiet w tamtym czasie, stan ich edukacji w tym tej z zakresu seksualności. W trzecim rozdziale ukazuję najważniejsze wyznaczniki noweli jako gatunku oraz jej historię. Czwarty rozdział to zarys problematyki i analiza dziewiętnastu nowel, w których pojawia się motyw małżeństwa. Na moje interpretacje duży wpływ mają teksty współczesnych badaczek feministyczno-literackich – między innymi Krystyny Kłosińskiej czy Jadwigi Zacharskiej. Pracę kończy podsumowanie zawierające statystyki wyłaniające się z analizowanych tekstów.

The aim of this thesis is to picture marriage portrait described in Gabriela Zapolska’s novellas provided for texts from the contemporary criticism of feminist-literary categories. I begin first chapter with a recap of the research state. Later I analyze Zapolska’s view on the equality of woman, their role in social life and marriages described in her letters and journalism. I also present author’s biography. In the next chapter I focus on showing socio-cultural background that accompanied the institution of marriage in the 19th/20th century. I discuss woman’s legal status in that time and their education state in sexuality context. In third chapter I show the most important determinants of novella as a literary genre and its history. Fourth chapter is outline of issues and analysis of 19 novellas where the marriage motive is showed. My interpretations are largely influenced by the texts of contemporary feminist-literary researchers – including Krystyna Kłosińska and Jadwiga Zacharska. The thesis ends with a summary including statistics emerging from the analyzed text.
