Mechanistic studies on thermal and photoreactions of coordination compounds may be very useful in designing new systems suitable for solving environmental or medical problems. Some metal compounds (complexes) can activate small molecules which then play a role of powerful oxidation agents. Selected examples of such systems are presented below.
