Background: Although splenectomy has been performed to treat primary and secondary hypersplenism, this procedure may cause many complications. To diminish the rate of complication in portal hypertensive patients, other, less invasive methods, have been used for treatment of hiperspelnism. Case Report: This article presents a case of splenic artery embolization performed in a young woman with splenomegaly and hipersplenism in the course of portal hypertension induced by hepatic cirrhosis post HBV and HCV infections. Metallic coils were used as embolic material. Patient was in good condition after the procedure. During 3 month follow-up after the procedure gradual decrease of splenic size and increase in the level of platelets were noted. Decrease of liver function was not observed. Conclusions: Partial splenic embolization is a safe and effective therapy of hypersplenism in cirrhosis, alternative to splenectomy.
