The continued influence effect (CIE) is a phenomenon of the continuous influence of misinformation on the inferences of an individual, despite the misinformation being retracted. The aim of this article is to present this phenomenon, compare it to the misinformation effect (PME) known in Polish literature and indicate the practical implications of research on it. The literature review was carried out, presenting the 30-year history of research on the continued influence effect, discussing its mechanisms and determinants, as well as the ways to reduce it. An attempt was also made to organize the nomenclature related to misinformation, focusing on the native meaning of this word. As eyewitness testimonies are prone to distortion and often retracted or corrected during an investigation, this may expose various judicial authorities to the effects of CIE, such as improper decisions and unfair sentences. Therefore, it is proposed to pay attention to the research on CIE and its forensic context in order to find ways to minimize the effects of this phenomenon.pl
