MRI-based methods have made significant advances in measuring perfusion and are now in widespread use in the evaluation and management of cerebrovascular disease. DSC EPI MRI has become a well-established method to determine relative regional cerebral blood flow in normal and pathological brain tissue. ASL techniques are capable of measuring relative cerebral blood flow without using extrinsic contrast agents by labeling spins of flowing arterial blood. Both the ASL and DSC MRI yield highly comparable perfusion values in normal brain tissue. They have also been successfully used to measure perfusion in various pathologic conditions, such as epilepsy, stroke, Alzheimer's disease and brain tumors. ASL is a completely non-invasive method allowing repeated measurements as needed for treatment monitoring. The aim of the paper was to present these methods of perfusion imaging on the basis of literature review.
