Redesigning the Future in Dana Arieli's "Phantoms"

Artykuł jest analizą projektu izraelskiej profesorki historii i artystki Dany Arieli "Fantomy". Podróż śladami pozostałości po dyktaturach, realizowanego nieprzerwanie od 2009 roku. "Fantomy" stanowią olbrzymie archiwum fotograficzne, udostępnione na stronie internetowej projektu, na które składa się ponad piętnaście tysięcy fotografii pozostałości po upadłych reżimach niedemokratycznych. Uwiecznione przez Arieli obiekty autorka traktuje jako równoprawne elementy wieloświata (pluriverse). Autorka artykułu przypisuje fotografowanym przez Arieli pozostałościom dyktatur zdolność sprzeciwiania się (to object) celom, w jakich były zaprojektowane, oraz sposobom, w jakie były wykorzystywane czy interpretowane. Pozostałości po upadłych dyktaturach politycznych stają się podstawą tworzonego przez Arieli projektu zmiany przyszłości, który ma silny wymiar etyczny - jego celem jest bowiem niedopuszczenie do odrodzenia się starych lub narodzin nowych form reżimów autorytarnych.

The article is an analysis of the project "Phantoms: Journeys After Relics of Dictatorships" by Dana Arieli, an Israeli history professor and artist. "Phantoms" is an immense photographic archive, which has been developed since 2009, and which is available on the project's website. It consists of over fifteen thousand photographs of the relics of the fallen undemocratic regimes. Nikody uses the concept of the pluriverse to interpret relics photographed by Arieli as things which have the ability to object the purposes for which they were designed and the ways they were used or interpreted. The author of the article argues that the documentation of relics of the fallen political dictatorships is the starting point for the process of redesigning the future. It has a strong ethical aim to prevent the revival of old or new forms of authoritarian regimes.
