Loss of data and information as reflected in scholars' experience : preliminary report

Przedstawiono wyniki jakościowego badania doświadczeń 13 polskich naukowców, związanych ze stratą informacji i danych. Wykorzystano kompleks metod i technik badawczych obejmujących analizę i krytykę piśmiennictwa, metodę badania dokumentów zastanych, autoetnografię, analizę tematyczną i indywidualny wywiad pogłębiony. Zaproponowano kategoryzację strat informacji i danych, opisywanych przez respondentów. W badanym materiale znaleziono tylko jeden przypadek straty informacji i danych mającej bezpośredni wpływ na zachowania informacyjne i warsztat pracy badacza. Stworzono zalążek definicji straty nieodwracalnej. Wyniki badania zinterpretowano przez pryzmat pojęcia homeostazy informacyjnej.

The paper presents the results of a qualitative study of data and information loss as reflected in the experience of 13 Polish scholars. A complex of research methods and techniques were applied, including critical review of literature, existing documents analysis, autoethnography, thematic analysis and individual in-depth interview. The author proposed a categorization of information and data losses described by the respondents, as well as a tentative definition of irreversible loss. It is worth noting that only one loss found in studied material concerned and directly influenced information practices proper to the scholarly research work. The outcomes of the study are interpreted through the prism of the concept of information homeostasis.
