Augustine’s critic of classical education from the New Rhetoric’s perspective

Artykułu tego nie należy traktować jako specjalistycznego opracowania na temat tekstów Św. Augustyna. Jego założenie jest mocno ograniczone do pokazania, w jaki sposób Nowa Retoryka oferuje wskazówkę pomagającą elastycznie reagować na rywalizację między konfiguracjami argumentacyjnymi wyłaniającymi się z różnych środowisk społeczno-kulturowych. Wyznania św. Augustyna, a w szczególności krytyka klasycznej edukacji, która była także udziałem autora, pozwala na zbadanie czterech aspektów, które zdają się być ściśle powiązane z systemem Perelmana: relacji między systemem epideiktycznym (a) a edukacyjnym (b) (gdyż oba wzmacniają przywiązanie do fundamentalnych wartości w danym społeczeństwie), społeczno-historycznego charakteru tych wartości (c) oraz zainteresowania postrzeganiem Nowej Retoryki jako projektu filozoficznego (d).

This paper shouldn’t be considered as a specialized study on Augustinian texts. Its ambition is much limited: to show how the New Rhetoric offers a coordinate which helps to supplely address the competition between argumentative configurations emerging from different socio-cultural backgrounds. Saint Augustine’s Confessions, and in particular the critique of classical education which was the author’s own education, allows us examine the four aspects to which seem intimately intertwined in the Perelman’s system: the relation between epideictic (a) and educative system (b) (as they both reinforce the adhesion to fundamental values in a given society), the socio-historically situated character of those values (c) and the interest of considering the New Rhetoric as a philosophical project (d).

La présente contribution ne se veut pas une étude érudite sur les textes augustiniens. Son ambition se borne à montrer comment la nouvelle rhétorique perelmanienne offre un système de coordonnées permettant d’aborder avec souplesse la compétition entre des configurations argumentatives issues de contextes socio-culturels différents. Les Confessions de Saint Augustin, et notamment la critique de l’éducation classique qui fut la sienne, permettent ainsi de revenir sur quatre thèmes qui, dans une perspective perelmanienne, nous semblent intimement liés : le lien entre l’épidictique (a) et le système éducatif (b) en ce qu’ils portent sur des valeurs fondamentales dans une société donnée, le caractère socio-historiquement situé de ces valeurs (c) et l’intérêt d’envisager la nouvelle rhétorique comme un projet philosophique (d).
