Shakespeare and "doubting reality" : the Hamletism of late-Romanticism

Artykuł stanowi próbę ukazania sposobów czytania Szekspira przez późnych romantyków, jakimi są - urodzeni w roku 1821 - Cyprian Norwid i Charles Baudelaire. Składa się on z dwóch części: pierwsza poświęcona jest stosunkowi poetów do fenomenu lektury i twórczego prze-pisania dzieł Szekspira jako wielkiego poprzednika; druga dotyczy ich interpretacji Hamleta i oceny hamletyzmu jako postawy egzystencjalnej. Autorka dowodzi, że rozumiejąc historyczną zmienność lektury, związaną z przemianami wspólnot interpretacyjnych oraz z dekontekstualizacją, obaj twórcy demonstrują ponadczasowość geniuszu Szekspira, którego "odkrywają" na nowo, postulując wobec niego twórczą zdradę. W obu przypadkach twórczy lęk prowadzi od uwielbienia do prze-pisania. W centrum refleksji znajduje się odczytanie przez obu poetów Hamleta. Interpretacji poddany został hamletyzm jako szekspirowska postawa "zwątpienia rzeczywistości", w sposób szczególny zinterioryzowana przez to pokolenie, po części kontynuujące rozpoznania starszych romantyków, po części wobec nich polemiczne. Konkluzję artykułu stanowi stwierdzenie, że Hamlet Norwida i Baudelaire’a uwalnia się od Szekspira i uwalnia się od romantycznego hamletyzmu, wciąż jednak jest dla nich atrakcyjnym punktem odniesienia dla samoidentyfikacji.

The article attempts to illustrate the ways in which the late-Romantics, Cyprian Norwid and Charles Baudelaire, born in 1821, read Shakespeare. It comprises two parts. The first is devoted to the poets’ attitude to the phenomenon of reading and creatively rewriting the works of Shakespeare as a great forerunner. The second con- cerns their interpretation of Hamlet and their evaluation of Hamletism as an existential attitude. The author argues that by understanding the historical variability of reading, associated with the transformations of the communities of interpretation and decontextu- alisation, both authors demonstrate the timelessness of Shakespeare’s genius, which they “rediscover” afresh, postulating its creative betrayal. In both cases, creative fear leads from worship to overwriting. The core of these reflections is both poets’ reading of Hamlet. Hamletism was interpreted as a Shakespearean attitude of “doubting reality”, interiorized in a particular way by this generation, in part continuing the investigations undertaken by the older Romantics, and in part polemical towards them. The article’s conclusion is that the Hamlet of Norwid and Baudelaire frees itself from both Shakespeare and Romantic Hamletism, albeit remaining an attractive point of reference for their self-identification.
