Abstract in English
Cultural identity of the European Union after its enlargement constitutes a vital issue for both its „old” and its „new” members. The mere fact that the newcomers will bring with them their own values and experience strongly marked by communism will affect the cultural and identity make-up of the EU founders. Moreover, operating global processes, e.g. immigration, constitute a new framework against which to define Western Europe. The article is an attempt to discuss identity dilemmas faced by Eastern and Central Europeans against the background of changing concept of European identity as understood in the West.
