Niniejsza praca opowiada w głównej mierze o istotach nadprzyrodzonych w japońskiej mitologii popularnej oraz o ich wpływie na mentalność i zachowanie Japończyków. Omawiane istoty dzielimy na kilka kategorii: ikiryō, czyli duchy osób żyjących, yūrei, czyli duchy osób zmarłych oraz yōkai, czyli istoty demoniczne. Mowa jest również o religii wyznawanej w Japonii oraz o jej znaczeniu, co ma silny związek z wiarą w istoty nadprzyrodzone. Wszelakie powieści o duchach mają swój początek w epoce Edo i opowiadane są w różnych formach kultury popularnej aż po czasy dzisiejsze. W pracy znajduje się także fragment o wróżbiarstwie, które cieszy się ogromną popularnością wśród Japończyków i nie tylko, podobnie jak wiara w przesądy czy astrologia. Celem pracy jest potwierdzenie tezy, iż podania o duchach żywych oraz zmarłych do dziś funkcjonują w japońskim społeczeństwie i wywierają istotny wpływ na życie Japończyków. Ciekawe jest to, że tego typu postawa może wywodzić się z wielu przyczyn, nawet z tych czysto psychologicznych – próba oswajania się z tym, co budzi lęk oraz niepokój.

This thesis is mainly about supernatural beings in Japanese popular mythology and their influence on the mentality and behavior of the Japanese people. We divide these beings into several categories: ikiryō, the spirits of the living people, yūrei, the spirits of the dead, and yōkai, the demonic beings. There is also a chapter about the religion of Japan and its importance, which has a strong connection with the belief in supernatural beings. All ghost novels have its roots in the Edo era and are told in various forms of popular culture up to the present day. There is also an excerpt about divination, which is very popular not only among the Japanese, but also all over the world, as well as belief in superstition or astrology. The aim of my work is to confirm the thesis that the stories about the ghosts of the living and the deceased do still function in Japanese society and have a significant impact on the lives of the Japanese. It is fascinating that this type of attitude can come from many reasons, even purely psychological ones - an attempt to get used to what causes fear and anxiety.
