Celem pracy jest przedstawienie tematu tożsamości w kontekście płci i seksualności zawartego w dwóch powieściach z początku dwudziestego wieku: Orlando Virginii Woolf i Źródle samotności Radclyffe Hall. W pracy omawiane są zmiany postrzegania kobiecości i męskości oraz zmiany w psychologicznym nastawieniu do nie-heteroseksualności, które miały początek w społeczeństwie wiktoriańskim. Praca również omawia wpływ modernizmu jako ruchu literackiego, który zwrócił uwagę twórców na głębię ludzkiej psyche, a co za tym idzie tożsamości, oraz na niedoskonałość binarnych podziałów. Praca dowodzi, że Orlando zwraca uwagę na płynność tożsamości płciowej i konstruktywności płci w społeczeństwie. Z kolei Źródło samotności służy jako przykład poszukiwania istoty tożsamości, jak i próby zaakceptowania tożsamości nieheteronormatywnej.

The aim of the thesis is to discuss representations of gender identity and sexuality in two novels from the early 20th century: Orlando by Virginia Woolf and The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall. The thesis explores the changes in the perception of femininity and masculinity and the psychological attitude towards non-heterosexuality, present in Victorian society. It also mentions the influence of modernism as a literary movement in turning authors’ attention to the depth of human psyche and therefore identity, and to the inadequacy of binary divisions. The thesis leads to a conclusion that Orlando argues towards fluidity of gender identity and gender as a social construct whereas The Well of Loneliness illustrates the search for the essence of identity and the struggle for accepting a queer identity.
