Liberal education in the context of higher education

Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza wybranych współczesnych ujęć anglosaskiego nurtu liberal education (kształcenia ogólnego) w kontekście systemu wiedzy uniwersyteckiej. Autorka prezentuje klasyczną refleksję J. H. Newmana na temat liberal education, jako punkt wyjścia dla współczesnych rozważań A. Blooma i A. MacIntyre’a na temat kondycji humanistyki, uniwersytetu i kształcenia ogólnego. Rozważania zostają wzbogacone odwołaniem do realiów polskiego szkolnictwa wyższego, a także inspirują do refleksji nad przyszłością kształcenia ogólnego w kontekście pogłębiających się tendencji utylitarystycznych w edukacji.

The article presents the analysis of selected modern approaches to liberal education (general education) in the context of knowledge system of academic education. The reflection of J. H. Newman on liberal education is the basis for the contemporary reflection of A. Bloom and A. MacIntyre on the condition of university, the humanities, and general education. The analysis also includes references to the reality of Polish higher education system, and it constitutes an inspiration for further reflection on the future of general education in the context of deepening utilitarian tendencies in today’s education.
