Mity i związane z nimi procesy mitologizacji stanowią ważny element pamięci kulturowej. Rozumiane za Rolandem Barthesem jako systemy semiologiczne stanowią siłę zdolną poddać reinterpretacji dosłownie każdy element rzeczywistości. Dzieje się tak również z historią Narcyza, niejako zmitologizowaną podwójnie - raz ujętą w formie klasycznie rozumianego greckiego mitu starożytnego, drugi raz - traktowaną jako metaforę na współczesną, egocentryczną i pełną samozachwytu kulturę. W pierwszej części tekstu omówiony zostaje procesu mitologizacji obrazu Narcyza jako metafory opisującej kulturę współczesną. Następnie podjęta zostaje próba jego ponownej reinterpretacji z pomocą mniej znanej wersji mitu autorstwa Pauzaniasza, która pozwala na przesunięcie akcentów i przepisanie sensu kryjącego się za "narcystyczną kulturą". Stałaby się ona wtedy kulturą pamięci o samym sobie, skupioną na introspekcji oraz próbie poradzenia sobie ze stratą, samotnością oraz niepewnością.

Myths and related to them processes of mythologization are important elements of cultural memory. Defined after Roland Barthes as semiological systems, they are a force capable of reinterpreting literally every element of reality. This also happens to the story of Narcissus, somewhat mythologized twice - once as it's expressed in the form of the classical Greek ancient myth, and the second time - treated as a metaphor for a contemporary, self-centered and self-sustaining culture. The first part of the text discusses the mythologization process of Narcissus's image as a metaphor for contemporary culture. Then an attempt is made to reinterpret it again with the help of a less known version of the myth by Pausanias, which allows the shift of significant points and rewrite the meaning behind "narcissistic culture". It would then become a culture of memory about oneself, focused on introspection and an attempt to cope with loss, loneliness and uncertainty rather than egoism and fear of others.
