"Klostret i Lhassa liknar dessa molnborgar" : Öst möter Väst i "Ockulta dagboken"
"The Monastery in Lhassa is like those clouds" : East meets West in the "Occult diary"
Recenzowana publikacja z międzynarodowej konferencji "Strindberg and the Western canon" (01.06.2017- 04.06.2017; Kraków). Strona wydawcy: https://www.wuj.pl
The article deals with Strindberg’s studies on Eastern religions and the orientalist aspects of his Occult diary. Strindberg was an ardent cultural globalist, interested in Chinese, Japanese, and Indian religions, cultures and classical texts. As on many other occasions, he recycles old ideas and incorporates them in his own literary universe, an eclectic worldview tainted by the concepts of Swedenborg. Several entries in his diary deal with the Chinese I Ching book and with Hinduistic and Buddhistic concepts of the material world as a delusion. Indian classical thought that Stindberg refers to is mediated by the works of Schopenhauer. The article inscribes the Occult diary in the tradition of Modernism’s fascination with China and India that can be traced in the works of Pound, Yeats, and Fennolosa.
