Celem tej pracy jest analiza problematyki przekładu w horrorze. Tłumaczenie horroru stwarza wiele wyzwań w zależności od tego, co autor dzieła chciał osiągnąć. Delikatna równowaga pomiędzy wiernym i kiepskim przekładem może być łatwo zaburzona np. tylko poprzez wybranie podobnych, ale nie identycznych lub bliskich odpowiedników słów użytych w oryginalnym tekście. Rola tłumacza w przekładzie horroru jest więc dość integralna dla ogólnego odbioru dzieła. Efekt rzeczywistości, który w horrorach jest dominującym pojęciem, musi być także obecny w przekładzie w celu zachowania jego integralności i wierności względem oryginału. Dzieło Stephena Kinga To oraz jego najnowszy polski przekład autorstwa Roberta Lipskiego zostały wybrane jako podstawa do analizy powyższych rozważań. Praca jest podzielona na trzy rozdziały. Rozdział pierwszy omawia pokrótce ideę strachu w horrorze, historię horroru jako gatunku literackiego oraz jego główne podgatunki. Ponadto wskazany rozdział poddaje analizie znaczenie osoby Stephena Kinga dla gatunku horroru, przedstawiając jego krótką biografię i najbardziej znaczące dzieła. Rozdział drugi analizuje możliwe wyzwania i strategie przyjęte w przekładzie horroru oraz przedstawia analizę obecnego stanu badań nad przekładem wskazanego gatunku literackiego. Rozdział trzeci jest ściśle analityczny i koncentruje się na starannie wybranych dwudziestu dwóch fragmentach powieści. Każdy fragment różni się długością i stopniem skomplikowania oraz obejmuje różne aspekty książki, np. atmosferę, różne formy "tego", bohaterów czy antagonistów. Aspekt analityczny ostatniego rozdziału opiera się na dogłębnej analizie zarówno strategii tłumaczeniowych użytych w polskiej wersji językowej To oraz ogólnej wierności angielskiemu oryginałowi.

The purpose of this thesis tackles the problem of horror fiction translation. Translation of horror fiction creates many challenges, depending on what the author wanted to evoke. The delicate balance between faithful and unfaithful translation can be easily broken only by choosing, e.g., similar, but not the exact or close equivalents of words used in the ST. The role of the translator of horror fiction is thus quite integral to the overall reception of the translated work. The reality effect, which in horror fiction is the prevalent notion, must also be reintroduced in the TT, in order to maintain the identical or similar feel of the original literary work. Stephen King’s It and its most recent Polish translation produced by Robert Lipski is the basis of this thesis on which the analysis of horror fiction translation is made. The thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses briefly the role of fear in horror and history of horror fiction as a genre of literature and its main subgenres. The chapter also briefly analyses the prominence of Stephen King within the genre, presenting his short biography and his most notable works. Chapter 2 explores the possible challenges and strategies adopted in translation of horror fiction and provides an analysis of the current state of research on translating said genre of literature. Chapter 3 is strictly analytical and centres on the carefully chosen twenty-two excerpts taken from the novel. Each excerpt varies in length and complexity, and covers different aspects of the book, e.g., atmosphere, different forms of “it”, protagonists or human antagonists. The analytical aspect of the last chapter relies on the in-depth analysis of translation strategies adopted in the Polish version of It and its overall faithfulness to the original English source.
