Between individuation and individuality. The act of being and its role in the debate on individuation in modern metaphysics.

Niniejsza praca z zakresu metafizyki analitycznej dotyczy problematyki zasady jednostkowienia. Cel pracy jest dwojaki: po pierwsze ukazanie że problematyka jednostkowienia i jednostkowości w ogóle pozostaje kwestią wciąż otwartą dla metafizyki analitycznej, po drugie zaś wskazanie, że konkurencyjną dla bardzo współcześnie atrakcyjnej teorii jednostkowienia poprzez haecceitas może być – zdawałoby się anachroniczna – koncepcja ontologiczna świętego Tomasza z Akwinu. Aby dowieść swej tezy, autorka niniejszej pracy analizuje różne koncepcje jednostkowienia, w tym i teorię wiązki czy bardziej historyczne jak na przykład jednostkowienia przez materię czy formę. Zauważa, że każde z tych stanowisk obarczone jest poważnymi wadami. Temu poświęcone są pierwsze rozdziały niniejszej pracy. W trzecim i finalnym rozdziale, autorka analizuje koncepcję haecceitas i wskazuje na poważne problemy, jakie się w niej pojawiają. Trzy fundamentalne zarzuty, jakie są stawiane haecceitas to: uzależnienie jednostkowienia od różnicy relatywnej, eksternalność relacji haecceitas, która prowadzi do regresu, oraz niejasności eksplikacyjne. Traktując te trzy jak papierek lakmusowy, autorka poddaje próbie akt istnienia. Okazuje się, że żaden z przywołanych problemów nie pojawia się w ich przypadku.

This thesis is dedicated to the analysis of the philosophical problem of individuation. There are two goals the author is trying to achieve here: first and foremost to showcase quite clearly that the questions of individuation and being particular are far from being answered by contemporary analytical metaphysics. Secondly, the author wishes to present a competitor to quite popular individuation theory based on the notion of haecceitas: saint Thomas Aquinas’ theory of actus essendi, even though it might appear as anachronistic. To prove her thesis, the author analyses various theories of individuation, including modern bundle theory as well as more historical ones such as matter or form. The author notices that each of the mentioned concepts is ridden with serious issues. These are being showcased and debated throughout the two first chapters of the thesis. The third and last one serves as an analysis of the modern concept of haecceitas. It is proved there, there are three major issues appearing within that theory: the problem of individuation intertwined with the problem of difference, secondly the problem of externality of haecceitization, which leads to regress, and thirdly tremendous explanatory problems when trying to explicate haecceitas. These three major issues serve as litmus paper for actus essendi. As it turns out, thus proving the thesis, saint Thomas Aquinas’ theory is free of these.
