Przedstawienie elementów kulturowych w dwóch polskich tłumaczeniach "Wielkiego Gatsby'ego" Francisa Scotta Fitzgeralda

Autorka pracy porównuje i analizuje dwa polskie tłumaczenia powieści Francisa Scotta Fitgeralda Wielki Gatsby ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem podejścia tłumaczy do elementów kulturowych. W pierwszym rozdziale zostały przedstawione podstawowe informacje o książce, takie jak biografia autora, streszczenie, zarys społeczno-kulturowy i historyczny, styl autora. Omówione zostały również aspekt symboliczny oraz intertekstualność. W drugim rozdziale znajduje się zarys teoretyczny zagadnień związanych z tłumaczeniem elementów kulturowych. Omówione są relacje między kulturą, językiem, a tłumaczeniem. Przedstawione zostały również klasyfikacje elementów kulturowych a także możliwych rozwiązań podczas ich tłumaczenia. Oprócz tego, wspomniane zostały również teoria polisystemu, teoria skoposu i tłumaczenie jako forma „przepisywania” oryginału. Trzeci rozdział został poświęcony analizie porównawczej wybranych fragmentów dwóch polskich przekładów. W tej części pracy są analizowane poszczególne rozwiązania tłumaczy, podkreślone są słabe i mocne strony tłumaczeń. Pokazano również, że czas dzielący obydwa przekłady mógł wpłynąć na różne decyzje tłumaczy.

The author of the thesis compares and analyzes two Polish translations of Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby with special regard to their treatment of culture-specific elements. The first chapter includes some background information, such as biography of the author, summary of the book, socio-cultural and historical background, features of the author’s style. Aspects like symbols and intertextuality are also discussed. In the second chapter the theoretical framework of culture-specific elements is presented. It deals with relations between culture, language and translation. Classifications of culture-specific elements as well as possible translation solutions are depicted. Besides, polysystem theory, skopos theory and translation as a form of rewriting are mentioned. The third chapter is devoted to the comparative analysis of selected passages from the two Polish translations. Particular solutions made by the translators are scrutinized, pros and cons of the translators’ decisions are shown. Besides, it was demonstrated that the time gap between both translations may have influenced some of the translators’ decisions.
