Kinematograficzne ukazanie postaci Winstona Churchilla: analiza porównawcza The Gathering Storm (1974), The Gathering Storm (2002), and Darkest Hour (2017)

Niniejsza praca dyplomowa koncentruje się wokół osoby Sir Winstona Churchilla i ma na celu zbadanie atmosfery wokół jego osoby na przestrzeni lat. Składa się ona z czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich stanowi zwięzłą biografię Churchilla i skupia się na najważniejszych momentach z życia legendarnego przywódcy. Pozostałe trzy rozdziały są analizą wybranych produkcji i opisują je w kolejności chronologicznej. Pierwszy oraz trzeci film zostały wyprodukowane w podobnym tonie, jako że skupiają się na karierze Winstona Churchilla i na jego życiu politycznym. Ponadto, powstały one w niespokojnych czasach - Zimnej Wojny i Brexitu - gdy brytyjskie społeczeństwo potrzebowało silnego przywódcy i zapewnienia o potędze ich kraju. W drugim filmie natomiast, osoba sławnego polityka została przedstawiona w nieco inny sposób. W tej produkcji nacisk został postawiony na jego życie rodzinne oraz wewnętrzne rozterki. Zmiana w podejściu jest ściśle związana z datą produkcji filmu, jako, że powstał on w czasach względnego spokoju, jeśli chodzi o brytyjską scenę polityczną.Moja analiza udowadnia, że Winston Churchill był jednym z najważniejszych i najbardziej wpływowych polityków w historii. Jego życie, zarówno polityczne jak i prywatne, było wielokrotnie przedmiotem badań. Ponadto, dla Brytyjczyków Churchill stanowi symbol dawnej świetności oraz swego rodzaju pocieszenie w czasach politycznych niepokojów.

This dissertation aims to examine the society’s approach towards Sir Winston Churchill over the years, based on three films concerning his figure and his life around the time of the II World War. It consists of four chapters. Chapter I constitute a short biography and presents the most significant events in Churchill’s life. The rest of the chapters thoroughly investigate the chosen films in chronological order. The earliest and the latest analysed films share a similar atmosphere as both of them concentrate on the character’s career and his political life. They were also released around the time of momentous events in the history of Great Britain when people were in need of a charismatic leader. The other production, distributed during a relative peace, revolves around Churchill’s family life and presents him from a different angle.My analysis shows that Winston Churchill, despite some of his undesirable features and behaviour, has always been one of the most powerful and influential people in the history of politics. His figure was referred to when the English nation longed for consolation and a reminder of their glory. However, his character was also examined during peaceful times. This approach to his person proves that he has always been an admired politician, attracting people’s attention even many times after his death.
