Poetics of discomfort in the cinema of Ruben Östlund

Niniejsza praca ma na celu udowodnienie, że Rubena Östlunda bez wątpienia można włączyć do kanonu twórców stricte „dyskomfortowych”. W pierwszej części rozważań przybliżam sylwetkę szwedzkiego reżysera oraz konteksty, które przywołuje on w swoich dziełach, a także przedstawiam podstawowe informacje o genezie i współczesnym kształcie nordic cinema. Następnie opisuję edukację filmową odebraną przez reżysera oraz jej wpływ na jego twórczość. Drugi rozdział pracy poświęciłam prezentacji możliwie pełnego spektrum kategorii dyskomfortu – różnym propozycjom terminologicznym oraz koncepcjom teoretycznym, odnoszącym się do interesującego mnie zagadnienia. Część ostatnia, podzielona na dwa rozdziały, stanowi pogłębioną analizę twórczości Rubena Östlunda w odniesieniu do wypracowanych wcześniej narzędzi badawczych. Przy pomocy wybranych przykładów motywów i technik filmowych staram się unaocznić, w jaki sposób konkretne, zakotwiczone w fabule utworów filmowych sytuacje i motywy, przekładają się na poetykę „kina dyskomfortu” reżysera.

This BA thesis proves that Ruben Östlund can undoubtedly be included in the canon of „discomfortable” artists. In the first part of the work, I introduce the profile of the Swedish director and the contexts he recalls in his works. I present basic information about the genesis and contemporary shape of nordic cinema. Then I describe the film education received by the director and its impact on his movies. The second chapter of my work I devoted to the presentation of the possibly full spectrum of categories of discomfort – various terminology suggestions and theoretical concepts related to the issue I am interested in. The last part, divided into two chapters, is an in-depth analysis of Ruben Östlund's films in relation to previously developed research tools. With the help of the selected examples of motifs and film techniques, I try to illustrate how specific situations anchored in the plot of his films can be translated into the director's „cinema of discomfort” poetics.
