Celem mojej pracy dyplomowej jest udzielenie odpowiedzi na jedno z najbardziej nurtujących pytań bezpośrednio nawiązujących do kultury afroamerykańskiej i jej przeszłości. Czy słowo "nigger" wraz z innymi negatywnymi zwrotami powinno podlegać cenzurze lub zostać zastąpione przez mniej właściwe konotacje w ówczesnej literaturze? Jaki wpływ przekład na inne języki ma na oryginalne znaczenie i przesłanie tekstu w oczach czytelników z innych krajów?Wybrałem ten temat ze względu na nieustający wzrost kontrowersji na świecie przez słowo "nigger", które mogą w dłuższym czasie doprowadzić do nieodwracalnych zmian w amerykańskiej literaturze. W XXI wieku rząd Stanów Zjednoczonych z pomocą lokalnych wydawców, zaczął dostarczać swoim obywatelom nowe i alternatywne wydania bardzo istotnych książek, które miały bezpośredni wpływ na rozwój amerykańskiej kultury. Powieści takie jak "Zabić Drozda" czy "Idź Postaw Wartownika" stanowią unikatowe świadectwo historii swojego państwa i służą jako źródło wiedzy z bezpośrednim dostępem do leksykonu języka angielskiego i jego rozwoju, który miał miejsce kilka stuleci temu. Wprowadzają one bezcenną wiedzę odnośnie konfliktów o podłożu rasistowskim mających miejsce w obecnych czasach. Ich celem nie jest wyjaśnienie wydarzeń z przeszłości i zachęcanie do segregacji rasowej. Starają się nauczać i informować swoich odbiorców o szczególnych wzorcach językowych i kulturowych przedstawianych przez każdą społeczność z różnych okresów historycznych. Obraźliwe zwroty jak "czarnuch", "murzyński-kochanek" i "murzyn" są ściśle powiązane z trudną historią czarnoskórych obywateli Ameryki, będąc jednocześnie źródłem, które jednoczy Afroamerykanów z powodu ich pochodzenia i leksykonu. Toczący się proces cenzury wraz z istniejącymi problemami nieprawidłowej interpretacji charakterystycznej dla zagranicznego przekładu tych książek ma bezpośredni wpływ na czytelników. W wyniku czego nie są oni w stanie zdobyć odpowiednio bogatej wiedzy przekazanej przez głównego autora, będąc jednocześnie pozbawionym takiego doświadczenia.

In my thesis proposal I would like to answer to the most notorious question that is directly linked with the African-American culture and its past: Should the ‘n-word' be censored and replaced by less relevant connotations in modern literature alongside with other slur words and how its translations to different languages influence its original meaning in the eyes of foreign readers?I chose this precise topic due to the constant growth of controversies around the world in relation to the ‘n-word’, which in the long term can lead to irreversible changes in American literature. In the 21st century the U.S. government with a help from local publishers has started to provide its citizens with new and alternative editions of very important books, which have had a direct impact on American culture. Novels such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman provide a unique statement of their country’s history and serve as a source of knowledge with a direct insight into English lexicon and its language development, which happened over the last few centuries. They implement a valuable education for the racial conflicts that exist in modern times. They do not intend to bring facts from the past to support racial segregation rather than that they try to teach and inform their readers about certain language and cultural patterns represented by each community in different time periods. Slur words such as: ‘nigger’,‘nigger-lover’ and ‘nigga’ are connected with a deep and difficult history of people of colour, but in many cases they stand for the key factor that unites African-Americans because of their rich background and lexicon. The ongoing process of censorship and the existing problem of misinterpretations in foreign translations of these books has a direct impact on the readers. As a result, they are not able to gain a valuable and complete knowledge shared by their authors, as they are automatically denied of such experience.
