Prison subculture – hidden world of the penitentiary

Niniejsza praca podejmuje próbę poznania i zrozumienia zjawiska podkultury więziennej, które notowane jest w rodzimych jednostkach penitencjarnych już od wielu lat. Praca ma zarówno wymiar teoretyczny, jak i empiryczny. Pierwsza część przedstawia genezę, ewolucję oraz aktualny obraz drugiego życia w świetle badań i dzieł wielu teoretyków i praktyków penitencjarnych. W części drugiej zaprezentowano portret dzisiejszej podkultury więziennej stworzony na podstawie badań własnych przeprowadzonych w Zakładzie Karnym w Nowym Wiśniczu. Ujawnienie nieformalnego systemu zasad, norm i wartości podkultury więziennej, jej hierarchicznego układu władzy oraz zmian w niej zachodzących na przestrzeni lat powinno doprowadzić czytelnika do podjęcia samodzielnej próby udzielenia odpowiedzi na pytanie, ile części wspólnych i czy w ogóle, mają ze sobą subkultura więzienna lat 70. i 80. XX wieku z drugim nurtem więzienia wieku XXI.

The work attempts to cognize and understand the phenomenon of the prison subculture, which has been recorded in native penitentiary entities for many years. The work has both a theoretical and empirical dimension. The first part of the work presents the genesis, evolution and current image of the second life in the light of the research and writings of many theoreticians and penitentiary practitioners. The second part illustrate a portrait of the current prison subculture created on the basis of the author's research, conducted in a Polish prison in Nowy Wiśnicz. The disclosure of an informal system of principles, norms and values of the prison subculture, its hierarchical structure of authority and changes over the years should lead the reader to make an independent attempt to answer the question whether the prison subculture of the 1970s and 1980s and the subculture of the second life of the 21st century have common parts.
