The Trojan tradition in Rome

Historia przedstawiona przez Homera w jego poematach od wieków wzbudza zachwyt, a sama Troja już od czasów starożytnych utożsamiana była z niebywałą potęgą. Dla Rzymian opowieść o wojnie trojańskiej i jej skutkach stała się jednak czymś więcej niż źródłem archetypów i wzorów do naśladowania - uczyniono z niej kolebkę państwa rzymskiego. Praca ta ma na celu przedstawienie i scharakteryzowanie przejawów tradycji trojańskiej w Rzymie w okresie republiki oraz w czasach panowania Oktawiana Augusta, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem rozwoju samej legendy założycielskiej "Wiecznego Miasta" oraz propagandy augustowskiej.

The story presented by Homer in his poems has aroused admiration for ages, and Troy itself has been identified with power since ancient times. For the Romans, the story of the Trojan war and its consequences become something more than a source of archetypes and inspirations - it became a cradle of their natiom. This work aims to present and characterize the manifestations of the Trojan tradition in Rome during the republic period and during the reign of Octavian August, with particular emphasis on the development of the founding legend of the "Eternal City" and the August's propaganda.
