The Role of Islam in Political Systems of Iran and Saudi Arabia

Tematem pracy jest rola islamu w systemach politycznych Iranu i Arabii Saudyjskiej. Składa się ona z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich przedstawia najnowszą historię obu państw z uwzględnieniem wydarzeń istotnych dla systemu politycznego każdego z nich, lub mających swe ideologiczne korzenie w zasadach islamu. W drugim rozdziale zawarto definicje kluczowych pojęć, niezbędnych do pełnego rozumienia podanego tematu, np. system polityczny, sunnizm, szyizm. Trzeci rozdział stanowi analizę roli religii w ustawach zasadniczych oraz poszczególnych instytucjach systemów politycznych Iranu oraz Arabii Saudyjskiej. Do głównych konkluzji pracy należy m.in fakt, iż możliwości istniejących w Islamskiej Republice parlamentu oraz gabinetu, a także instytucji wyborów powszechnych są znacznie ograniczone przez prerogatywy Najwyższego Przywódcy, Rady Strażników Rewolucji oraz ciał im podległych, co w rezultacie stawia władzę religijną ponad władzą świecką. Innym istotnym wnioskiem wynikającym z analizy podanego tematu jest fakt, iż w Arabii Saudyjskiej nie mamy do czynienia z monarchią absolutną, lecz z odmianą monarchii dynastyjnej, posiadającą znaczny element władzy religijnej.

The subject of this thesis is the role of islam in political systems of Iran and Saudi Arabia. The thesis consists of three chapters. The first one briefly describes the contemporary history of those two countries, focusing on events which are either meaningful for the political system or have its ideological roots in the principals of islam. In the second chapter we get familiar with crucial definitions in terms of understanding the above topic, such as: political system, shia, sunni, etc. The last chapter is an analysis of the real influence of religion on the main institutions of irani and saudi political systems.One of the key conclusions is that in Islamic Republic the religious authority is supreme to secular one, as it can significantly limit the capabilities of the Cabinet, the Parliament and the elections as well. Another major deduction we can draw is that in Saudi Arabia, against the common belief, there is no absolute monarchy, rather the dynasty monarchy with chief element of religious authority.
