Medals Made by Johann Neidhardt in Order for the Dukes of Württemberg-Oels

Przedmiotem pracy są medale wykonane przez Johanna Neidhardta dla książąt z dynastii wirtembersko-oleśnickiej. Składa się ona z wprowadzenia, pięciu rozdziałów merytorycznych, zakończenia, katalogu oraz bibliografii. Ogólnie można stwierdzić, że twórczość medalierska Neidhardta właściwie nie spotkała się z większym zainteresowaniem badawczym, pomimo że jego oeuvre zostało dobrze rozpoznane za sprawą prac katalogowych.Najpierw przedstawiłem zarys mecenatu kulturalnego książąt wirtembersko-oleśnickich w 2. poł. XVII i na początku XVIII w. Bowiem pierwsze trzy pokolenia książąt prowadziły szeroki mecenat kulturalny, obejmujący m.in architekturę, kolekcjonerstwo, teatr i drukarstwo. Innym jego elementem było medalierstwo, którym zajmował się Johann Neidhardt - grawer pochodzący z Norymbergi. Osiadłszy w Bierutowie, pozostawał w służbie książęcej przez ponad 30 lat, zajmując się wykonywaniem medali, tłoków pieczętnych oraz gliptyką. Jego dzieła zapewniły mu uznanie i sukces materialny.W następnym rozdziale zostały zebrane i przeanalizowane wiadomości historyczne dotyczące Neidhardta i stworzonych przez niego dzieł, zaczerpnięte z literatury przedmiotu oraz materiałów archiwalnych pozostałych po działalności mennicy książęcej, przechowywanych obecnie w Archiwum Państwowym we Wrocławiu. Podczas kwerendy natrafiłem na instrukcje dla medaliera, treść złożonej przez niego przysięgi, szereg wzmianek, a także fragmentaryczne rachunki dotyczące produkcji i dystrybucji medali. Na podstawie tych rachunków podjąłem próbę identyfikacji odbiorców numizmatów. Rozdział zamykają dane na temat kolekcji medali zawierających dzieła Neidhardta.W kolejnym rozdziale przedstawiłem sumaryczną charakterystykę medali wykonanych przez Neidhardta, zamieszczonych w katalogu. Zostały w nim wskazane na dominujące oraz wyjątkowe cechy formalne i ikonograficzne numizmatów.Najobszerniejszą część pracy stanowi analiza. Najpierw odniosłem się do głównego problemu sygnalizowanego w dotychczasowym stanie badań, czyli artystycznej genezy twórczości Neidhardta. Po nakreśleniu zarysu rozwoju medalierstwa pod wpływem francuskim w omawianym czasie przeszedłem do charakterystyki sztuki medalierskiej w Norymberdze, Saksonii, Prusach i na Śląsku. Następnie podjąłem rozważania nad potencjalnymi pierwowzorami graficznymi kompozycji oraz emblematycznym charakterem niektórych przedstawień. W zakończeniu zgromadzono najważniejsze ustalenia wynikające z pracy.Dalej został zamieszczony katalog medali wykonanych przez Neidhardta dla książąt wirtembersko-oleśnickich, podzielonych na dzieła sygnowane i niesygnowane (przypisywane). Na końcu znalazła się bibliografia publikacji wykorzystanych do przygotowania pracy.

The subject of the thesis are medals made by Johann Neidhardt, commissioned by the Dukes of Württemberg-Oels. The thesis consists of introduction, five essential chapters, summary, catalogue and bibliography. Neidhardt's artistic creativity has never aroused more research interest despite the fact that his oeuvre had been well recognized thanks to many numismatic catalogues.At first, I have presented a sketch of cultural patronage of the Dukes of Württemberg-Oels in the 2nd half of the 17th and in the beginning of the 18th century. The first three generations of dukes led wide artistic patronage embracing architecture, collecting art, theatre and printing. Another its ingredient was the production of medals, which were made by Johann Neidhardt - engraver from Nuremberg. Having settled in Bierutów (Bernstadt), he remained in the ducal service for over thirty years, engraving medals, seals and precious stones. His works gave him esteem and material success.In the next chapter were gathered and examined different pieces of information concerning Neidhardt and his works, drawn from literature and historical records remaining after ducal mint, preserved in the National Archive in Wrocław. During a search I have found instructions for medallist, text of his oath, numerous references about him and also accounts concerning production and distribution of medals. On the basis of those accounts it became possible to identify a part of the medal recipients. The chapter is finished with a brief piece of information about numismatic collections containing Neidhardt's works.In the following chapter I have depicted a general characteristics of medals made by Neidhardt. I have drawn attention to dominant and particular features (both formal and iconographical) of discussed medals.The most extensive part of the thesis is the analysis. At its beginning, I have referred to the main problem raised in the literature so far, i.e. the origins of Neidhardt's art. After explaining the medal making development in the 2nd half of the 17th century under French influence, I have moved on to following characteristics of the art of medal making in Nuremberg, Saxony, Prussia and Silesia. Then, I have taken under consideration possible grahpic originals to some compositions and the emblematic meaning of some images (mostly on the reverse side). In the summary have been collected the most important findings included in the thesis.Further have been placed the catalogue of medals made by Neidhardt to order for the Dukes of Württemberg-Oels. It is divided into two parts. The first contains works with signature, the second - without it (attributed). At the end there is a bibliography of publications, which had been used to prepare the thesis.
