Alice Walker należy do najbardziej znanych i wybitnych afroamerykańskich pisarek wStanach Zjednoczonych. Oprócz tego jest sławną aktywistką i feministką. Nie jest więczaskakujące, że jednym z jej głównych zainteresowań są losy i problemy czarnoskórychkobiet. Tematem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest kobieca solidarność w powieści Kolorpurpury. Afroamerykanki w XX wieku borykały się nie tylko z rasizmem, ale także zseksizmem oraz patriarchatem, co było często ignorowane. Celem pracy jest udowodnienie,że jedyną nadzieją kobiet na wolność było zjednoczenie się i wspólna walka z opresją.Feministyczna filozofia Walker, czyli womanism, oraz wydarzenia z życia wpłynęły nadecyzję autorki o napisaniu powieści o takiej tematyce. Alice Walker is one of the most renown and prominent African-American writers.What is more, she is also a famous activist and feminist. It is therefore not surprising thatblack women's lives and problems are one of her major interests as a novelist. The subject ofthis thesis is female solidarity in The Color Purple. In the 20th century, African-Americanwomen struggled not only with racism but also with sexism and patriarchy, which was veryoften ignored. The aim of this thesis is to prove that black women had to unite and fighttogether against the oppression as it was their only hope for liberation. Alice Walker'sfeminist philosophy, namely womanism, as well as the real events in her life, influenced TheColor Purple and its subject matter. The thesis analyses the ways in which the novel's femalecharacters were oppressed in a patriarchal society. Next, it examines how the women, thanksto female solidarity, managed to gather their strengths and fought fearlessly in a male-dominatedworld. In the novel, it can be seen that the unity of African-American women andtheir common struggle were the only ways to change men's behaviour, which, consequently,led to the reconciliation between two sexes.
