The coats of arms of Polish bishops and Polish origin bishops working abroad in the years 1945-2015

Celem pracy jest prezentacja i analiza herbów biskupów polskich i pochodzenia polskiego, którzy w latach 1945-2015 pracowali w różnych częściach świata, poza Polską. Właściwą analizę poprzedza przegląd badań heraldyki kościelnej, zarówno polskiej, jak i zagranicznej oraz prezentacja ustawodawstwa kościelnego odnoszącego się do heraldyki kościelnej i biskupiej na przestrzeni ostatnich wieków. Główną część pracy stanowi szczegółowa analiza poszczególnych herbów. Biskupi zostali podzieleni według obszaru posługi, poczynając od hierarchów w Ameryce Północnej (stanowią oni najliczniejszą grupę), kolejno w Ameryce Łacińskiej, Afryce, Oceanii, Europie i Azji. Następnie omówiono herby należące do pracowników Watykanu - nuncjuszy apostolskich i pracowników Kurii Rzymskiej. W ostatniej części omówiono podobieństwa i różnice w herbach hierarchów polskich z całego świata i ukazano współczesne funkcje herbu biskupiego i dewizy biskupiej. Do pracy dołączono bogaty materiał ilustracyjny zamieszczony w katalogu wraz z opisami herbów biskupich i podstawowymi informacjami o biskupach.

The aim of the work is to present and analyze the coats of arms of Polish and Polish origin bishops, who in 1945-2015 worked in different parts of the world, outside Poland. The proper analysis is preceded by an overview of the study of the heraldry of the Church, both Polish and foreign, and the presentation of ecclesiastical legislation relating to ecclesiastical and episcopal heraldry over the past centuries. The main part of the work is a detailed analysis of each coat of arms. The bishops were divided according to the territory of the ministry, beginning with the hierarchies in North America (they are the largest group), respectively in Latin America, Africa, Oceania, Europe and Asia. Then featured the coats of arms belonging to the staff of the Vatican - Apostolic Nuncios and Roman Curia staff. The last part discusses the similarities and differences in the coats of arms of Polish hierarchs from around the world and shows the contemporary functions of the episcopal coat of arms and episcopal mottos. The work included a rich illustrative material in the catalog with descriptions of bishops' crests and basic information about the bishops.
