The impact of minority stress on the mental health of homosexuals persons

Problem zdrowia psychicznego oraz ogólnego dobrostanu osób homoseksualnych w ostatnich latach jest coraz częściej dyskutowany. Teoria stresu mniejszościowego jest bardzo interesującym wyjaśnieniem, który w sposób całościowy opisuje funkcjonowanie mniejszości seksualnych. W przedstawionym badaniu wzięły udział osoby homoseksualne mieszkające w Polsce i Anglii (w sumie 129 osób). W badaniu zastosowano Skale stresu mniejszościowego SMS, Kwestionariusz symptomów depresji CES-D, Kwestionariusz lęku STAI oraz Skalę akulturacji MIRIPS. Wyniki badania wskazują na wyższy poziom depresji i lęku u osób homoseksualnych mieszkających w Polsce. Specyficzna sytuacja społeczna osób homoseksualnych wpływa na ogólny dobrostan osób homoseksualnych.

The issue of mental health and psychological well-being of homosexual persons has been recently widely discussed. The theory of minority stress seems to be a very interesting explanation. It integrates a variety of risk factors, which may influence the stress level. The study included homosexual persons living in England and Poland. In the study were used: Minority Stress scale SMS, Depression scale CES-D, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory STAI and Acculturation scale MIRIPS. The results of the research shows that the prevalence of emotional problems among homosexual persons living in Poland is higher in comparison with the group of homosexual persons living in England. The problem was discussed in the context of living in the minority stress exposure.
