The socio-cultural background of the ethnic conflict between Tutsi and Hutu

Praca poświęcona jest konfliktowi etnicznemu pomiędzy Tutsi i Hutu, który doprowadził do ludobójstwa w Rwandzie w 1994 roku. Opis przedstawia genezę oraz analizę czynników przyczyniających się do powstania antagonizmu w społeczeństwie, a także historię kraju podzieloną na trzy epoki (okres przedkolonialny, czas dominacji europejskich mocarstw oraz okres od niepodległości do ludobójstwa). Jednocześnie jest to także interpretacja relacji świadków pogromu, jak i próba przedstawienia motywacji oprawców, które były kierowane działaniami rządu. Przedstawione zostały także nietypowe rozwiązana zastosowane w ramach sądownictwa oraz opis wpływu konfliktu na destabilizację w rejonie. Dodatkowo w pracy pojawiają się rozważania na temat przyszłego pojednania narodu rwandyjskiego, a także dążenia współczesnej polityki.

The thesis concerns the ethnic conflict between Tutsi and Hutu which led to the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. It depicts the origins of the antagonism in the society and analyses the factors that influenced it. The text offers an account of 3 phases in Rwands's history: the precolonial one, the period of European powers' domination and the interval between the proclamation of independence and the genocide. In addition, it includes an interpretation of the witness account of the violent attacks and attempts to demonstrate the aggressors' motives, driven by the government's actions. The text depicts the atypical solutions applied by the judiciary and discusses the conflict's destabilizing impact on the region. Furthermore, the thesis contains deliberations on the prospective conciliation among the Rwandans as well as the contemporary political developments in the Rwandan state.
