The second life of a work of art. Media reception of scandal in Polish art after 2010

Celem pracy jest pogłębiona refleksja nad skandalem medialnym w sztuce jako wielowymiarowym zjawiskiem, które wyrywa dzieło sztuki ze standardowego obiegu i ma potencjał poszerzania odbioru sztuki współczesnej. Część teoretyczna podzielona jest na dwa rozdziały, podejmujące zagadnienie skandalu z dwóch perspektyw - socjologii i teorii mediów oraz historii i teorii sztuki. Autorka prezentuje wybór światowych dzieł sztuki, które wywołały skandal, a także opisuje polską drogę sztuki do autonomii i omawia wybrane skandale z udziałem sztuki krytycznej z lat 90. oraz te, które miały miejsce od lat 2000. Część badawcza to analiza treści przekazów medialnych składających się na skandal wokół „Adoracji Chrystusa” Jacka Markiewicza oraz „Tęczy” Julity Wójcik. Autorka skupia się na odkryciu celów i strategii nadawców, jakie stoją za wybranymi narracjami, a także sprawdza, czy dyskurs wokół skandalu w sztuce może cechować wartość poznawcza i charakter edukacyjny.

The purpose of this thesis is to deepen the reflection on the media scandal in art as a multidimensional phenomenon that takes a work of art from standard circulation and has the potential to broaden the reception of contemporary art. The theoretical part is divided into two chapters, dealing with the issue of scandal from two perspectives - sociology and media theory, and history and theory of art. The author presents a selection of world-wide works of art that sparked scandals, describes the road to autonomy in Polish art, and discusses some of the scandals caused by Polish critical art in the nineties, as well as those that have happened since the 2000s. The research part is an analysis of the contents of the media coverage of the scandal surrounding "The Adoration of Christ" by Jacek Markiewicz and "Rainbow" by Julita Wójcik. The author focuses on discovering the goals and strategies of the broadcasters behind the selected narratives, and also verifies whether the discourse surrounding the scandal in art may have cognitive value and educational character.
