On social conditionings of the diagnosis of schizophrenia

Tematyka niniejszej pracy magisterskiej mieści się w obrębie nauk o zdrowiu psychicznym. Podejmuje kwestie źródeł schizofrenii, poszukiwania sensu choroby, opisu indywidualnych doświadczeń pacjentów przed i po zdiagnozowaniu ich stanu, formalnego i nieformalnego wsparcia środowiskowego, a przede wszystkim próbuje dokonać analizy autobiograficznej twórczości literackiej osób przeżywających kryzysy psychotyczne. Celem pracy jest wykazanie, że choroba psychiczna to tylko fragment życia człowieka; dzięki odpowiedniej terapii są duże szanse na remisję objawów i dobre życie. Lektura zaproponowanych w pracy książek potwierdza tę tezę. W pracy dokonano analizy pięciu wybranych powieści na wątkach autobiograficznych: „Obłęd” J. Krzysztonia, „Opowiadania” A. Wacławik, „Życie to nie bajka” J. Greenberg, „Cichy pokój” L. Schiller i A. Bennett oraz „Schizofrenia. Moja droga przez szaleństwo” E. Saks. Każdy z tych autorów doświadczył schizofrenii, opisuje historię swojej choroby i przez to pomaga społeczeństwu w jej zrozumieniu. Ponadto daje nadzieję chorującym na to, że ich cierpienie ma sens i może się kiedyś skończyć.

The subject matter of the master’s degree thesis lays within mental health science, and schizophrenia exemplifies the core problem. The study raises issues of the causes of schizophrenia and the meaning of the disease, describes experiences of certain individual patients before and after the diagnosis, shows potential of both formal and informal social assistance; but, first and foremost, the author focuses on the analysis of selected autobiographical literary works of psychiatric patients. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that the psychiatric illness constitutes only an episode in life, and with the help of proper therapy there is much chance for remission of symptoms and a good life. The reading matter of choice highly confirms the submitted proposition. The analysis of the five novels was performed, each with autobiographical plots: „Obłęd” by J. Krzysztoń; „Opowiadania” by A. Wacławik; „Życie to nie bajka” by J. Greenberg; „Cichy pokój” by L. Schiller and A. Bennett, and „Schizofrenia. Moja droga przez szaleństwo” by E. Saks.. All of the above mentioned authors were diagnosed with schizophrenia; their description of the disease not only helps the society to better understand its complexity, but is a great hope for patients that their suffering is not devoid of sense and may finally come to a happy ending.
