Powstanie Sojuszu Północnoatlantyckiego miało na celu zapewnienie bezpieczeństwa i wspólnej obronnośći państw członkowskich. Koncepcje strategiczne od początku istnienia NATO próbowały wiernie odzwierciedlić sytuację międzynarodową, dopasowując Sojusz do zmnieniającego się świata. W ramach koncepcji strategicznych ustalano najważniejsze kwestie dotyczące obrony obszaru traktatowego, tworząc wytyczne, zadania i cele. Na przełomie lat 1949 – 1968 powstały cztery takie dokumenty, były to kolejno: Strategiczna Koncepcja Obrony Obszaru Północnoatlantyckiego zapisana w dokumencie DC 6/1, Strategiczna Koncepcja Obrony Obszaru Północnoatlantyckiego MC 3/5, Ogólna Strategiczna Koncepcja Obrony Obszaru Północnoatlantyckiego MC 14/2 oraz Ogólna Koncepcja Strategiczna Obrony Obszaru Północnoatlantyckiego MC 14/3. Dokumenty te oraz wytyczne do ich implementacji, wprowadzały Sojusz na kolejne etapy rozwoju myśli strategicznej.

The purpose of creating NATO was to safeguard the freedom and security of its members by political and military means, mainly by collective defense. Since the very beginning of the Alliance, all strategic documents were to describe international relations and conditions as precisely as possible, adapting NATO to the changing world. Within the bounds of strategic concepts, alliance set the most important tactics concerning defense of the NATO territory. Between 1949 - 1968, 4 such documents were created, respectively: The Strategic Concept for the Defense of the North Atlantic Area DC 6/1, The Strategic Concept for the Defense of the North Atlantic Area MC 3/5, Overall Strategic Concept for the Defense of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Area MC 14/2, Overall Strategic Concept for the Defense of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Area MC 14/3. These documents as well as measures to implement them, introduced the Alliance into new levels of strategic concepts.
