The impact of communism on human’s life and historic side of human’s existence shown in novel “The Joke” by Milan Kundera

Niniejsza praca zajmuje się analizą wpływu systemu komunistycznego na życie człowieka oraz badaniem roli, jaką w ludzkim życiu odgrywa historia. Tematyka ta stała się dominującym problemem w debiucie powieściowym Milana Kundery - Žert (Żart, 1967). Autor zwraca uwagę na tragiczną przepaść między ludzkimi zamiarami a czynami oraz różnicę między wyobrażeniami o otaczającym świecie a jego rzeczywistą postacią. Tłem dla wydarzeń rozgrywających się w powieści Żart są lata pięćdziesiąte (okres, kiedy historia poddawała człowieka niezwykłym eksperymentom, powodując niekiedy transformację jego osobowości czy stawiając go w sytuacjach ekstremalnych) oraz lata sześćdziesiąte – czas rozliczenia z przeszłością. Niniejsza praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. W pierwszym z nich znajduje się zarys historyczny krótko charakteryzujący Czechosłowację doby komunizmu. W pracy uwzględnione zostało również tło biograficzne autora Żartu, które odegrało istotną rolę w kształtowaniu się jego osobowości twórczej. Kolejny rozdział porusza kwestie dotyczące aspektów psychologicznych komunizmu, rozpatrując je zarówno od strony teoretycznej jak i praktycznej. Ostatni rozdział poświęcony jest ukazaniu rozczarowania młodzieńczymi ideałami i rozliczeniu z okresem stalinowskim. Pojawia się tutaj kluczowy dla całego utworu motyw tytułowego żartu, stawiający zarówno bohaterów jak i odbiorców powieści przed pytaniem – a co jeśli historia żartuje?

This thesis analyses the impact of communism on individual and studies the role of history in its life. This subject became the main topic in Milan Kundera’s first novel - Žert (The Joke, 1967). Author pays attention not only to the tragic difference between human’s intents and acts but also to the one between concepts and reality. The action of the novel takes place in the 50’s (the time when people were subject to the experiments causing the transformation of their personalities or crisis situations) and the 60’s – time of settling accounts with past. This thesis consists of three chapters. The first one is the historic introduction describing communist Czechoslovakia. Another thing involved in the thesis is the short biography of Milan Kundera, which had an impact on his creations. The second chapter shows the psychological aspect of communism, considering it theoretically and virtually. The last one is dedicated to the disappointment with the ideal of youth times and settling with Stalinist era. Here comes the crucial motive of the joke, which rises the question – What if the history is joking?
