Sonata Form in Selected Piano Sonatas at the Turn of the 18th and 19th Centuries in the Light of the Sources from the Epoch

Celem niniejszej pracy jest próba analizy wybranych sonat fortepianowych z przełomu XVIII i XIX wieku w kontekście historycznych teorii formy sonatowej. Rozpatrywanie formy sonatowej w oparciu o omówione w rozdziale pierwszym koncepcje Heinricha Christopha Kocha, Francesco Galeazziego, Antona Reichy, Carla Czernego i Adolpha Bernharda Marxa ukazane zostało jako bardziej efektywny sposób analizy niż wykorzystanie tzw. teorii „szkolnej”. Zaprezentowane w rozdziale trzecim sonaty Jana Ladislava Dusíka, Muzio Clementiego, Johna Fielda, Johanna Nepomuka Hummla i Carla Marii von Webera to dzieła kompozytorów, których twórczość pozostaje wciąż mało znana i często niedoceniona. Rozdział drugi poświęcony jest zmianom zachodzącym w konstrukcji fortepianu oraz ich wpływowi na przemiany gatunku sonaty fortepianowej – w omawianym okresie szczególnie intensywnie rozwijało się budownictwo instrumentów. Choć w literaturze muzykologicznej temat formy sonatowej był podejmowany wielokrotnie,rozpatrywana w niniejszej pracy kwestia spojrzenia na formę pod kątem historycznych teorii, wydaje się być istotna, z uwagi na możliwość lepszej, bardziej skutecznej analizy utworów.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze selected piano sonatas composed at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, through the prism of historical theories of sonata form. Perceiving the sonata form according to the concepts of Heinrich Christoph Koch, Francesco Galeazzi, Anton Reicha, Carl Czerny and Adolph Bernhard Marx, was presented as a more effective way of analysis than the "textbook" theory. Sonatas of Jan Ladislav Dusik, Muzio Clementi, John Field, Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Carl Maria von Weber presented in the third chapter are the work of composers which remain unknown and often underestimated. The second chapter discusses the changes that took place in the construction of the instruments and their influence on the transformation of the piano sonatas genre. Although in the musicological literature the topic of the sonata form appears very often, the issue of perceiving the sonata form in terms of historical theories seems to be important, giving the possibility of better, more efficient analysis of composition.
