Polifonia w powieści strumienia świadomości w oparciu o "Panią Dalloway" Virginii Woolf, "Kiedy Umieram" Williama Faulknera i "House Mother Normal" B.S. Johnsona

Praca dyplomowa bada jak różne głosy przeplatają się w obrębie jednej powieści. Rozważam w niej trzy powieści strumienia świadomości: "Pani Dalloway", "Kiedy umieram" i "House Mother Normal" w kontekście teorii polifonii Mikhaila Bakhtina. W pracy skupiam się na dialogu prowadzonym między bohaterami oraz sposobie, w jaki na siebie oddziałują. Zwracam też uwagę na różnice między ich głosami, wielość subiektywnych perspektyw i możliwość bezpośredniego wglądu w umysły bohaterów. Rozdział pierwszy poświęcony został wyjaśnieniu terminologii użytej w pracy, jak i również zaproponowaniu odniesienia jej do wybranych utworów. W rozdziale drugim zajmuję się polifoniczną naturą dwóch głównych głosów powieści Virginii Woolf pod tytułem "Pani Dalloway" oraz rolą drugorzędnych bohaterów, jaką odgrywają w całokształcie powieści. W tym rozdziale wskazuję również, jak ogólny pogląd Virginii Woolf na przedstawienie świata w powieści wpłynął na jej sposób narracji. Rozdział trzeci bada formę utworu "Kiedy umieram" Williama Faulknera i sposób w jaki wpływa ona na narrację opowieści. W ostatnim rozdziale omawiam "House Mother Normal" autorstwa B.S. Johnsona, rozpoczynając od przedstawienia jego pracy, w której wyjaśnia on nietypowość formy swoich dzieł, oraz sugeruję, jak taka forma przestrzenna może być rozumiana w kategorii kompozycji muzycznej. Pracę zamyka podsumowanie ukazujące jak teoria polifonii odnosi się do głównych cech w wybranych powieściach.

This thesis studies various voices intermingled in one novel. It is based on Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of polyphony and applies it to the novels written in the stream of consciousness narrative mode: "Mrs. Dalloway", "As I Lay Dying" and "House Mother Normal". In my project I mostly concentrate on the dialogue between the characters, and how they influence one another. Moreover, I focus on differences between their voices, multiple subjective perspectives and the possibility of having a direct insight into the characters’ minds. The first chapter is devoted to explaining the basic terms such as: different techniques of the stream of consciousness novel, polyphony, and heteroglossia, as well as suggesting how they can be relevant to the selected works. The second chapter deals with polyphonic character of the two main voices in Virginia Woolf’s "Mrs. Dalloway", and the role of the minor voices in the overall composition. It also shows how it is related to Woolf’s views on the representation of the world in novels. The third chapter examines the form of "As I Lay Dying" and the way it influences how the story is narrated. In the final chapter, I examine "House Mother Normal", starting with presenting B. S. Johnson’s essay which explains the unusual forms of his works, and suggest how his spatial form can be understood as a musical score. My thesis is closed with the conclusion that points out how the theory of polyphony contributes to the discussion of the main features in the selected novels.
