Can we not stylize?

Artykuł podejmuje problem stylizacji literackiej na język mówiony (kolokwialny) oraz archaizacji. Autor zauważa, za Antoine’em Bermanem, trudność takich zabiegów stylizacyjnych, skutkującą wielu nieudanymi próbami przekładowymi, uważa jednak, że stylizacja jest konieczna i możliwa. Za punkt wyjścia przyjmuje pojęcie „kolokwialności fikcyjnej” (oralité fictive) Odile Schneider‑Mizony, które prowadzi do stworzenia „archi‑języka mówionego”; za wzorzec takiego tłumaczenia na gruncie polskim uważa przekłady Zofii Chądzyńskiej. Autor dowodzi, że taki sposób tłumaczenia może być stosowany analogicznie w innych typach stylizacji, w tym również archaizującej, o czym świadczą udane przekłady Tadeusza Boya‑Żeleńskiego i Andrzeja Nowaka.

The article discusses the problem of colloquializing and archaizing of literary style in translation. The author agrees with Antoine Berman that such stylistic measures are difficult and result in many failed translation attempts but he considers stylization necessary and possible. His point of departure is Odile Schneider‑Mizony’s concept of “fictitious colloquiality” (oralité fictive) which leads to the creation of “spoken archi‑language”; in his opinion, the model of such translation in Poland is provided by the works of Zofia Chądzyńska. The author argues that this way of translating can be applied to other types of style, including archaizing, as proved by the successful translations done by Tadeusz Boy‑Żeleński and Andrzej Nowak.
